Team Squash
Full Season Round-up 2010/2011
HumberSquash (4 Man)
Congratulations to afsquash B (capt: George Sheath) who were crowned champions of Div5 winning all 20 of their matches. In Div1 afsquash A (capt: Nick Bunch) finished an admirable 6th. Steve Hame also won the Div5 KO Tournament (Hammond Cup).
Grimsby 3 Man
Afsc had two divisional winners – afsquash 1 (capt: Alan Beal) in Div1 and afsquash J&M Machining Services (capt: Paul Matthewman) in Div2. In Div 2 fourth place went to afsquash Norfolk Optics (capt: Nigel Bratton) whilst in Div3 afsquash 2 (capt: Peter Hindmarsh) were runners-up and afsquash 3 (capt: George Sheath) finished in the top half of the division.
Lincs League
A tough season for our Lincs 3 Man team (capt: Joe Dixon) who had gained promotion to the premiership last season but were unfortunately relegated this season. Hopefully we can have a better club representation in the Lincs League next season.
Yorkshire League (5 Man)
A more promising season in which we ended mid-table in Div1 having narrowly avoided relegation in previous years. Some encouraging performances from the younger members of the team who continue to develop their competitive squash alongside their more experienced colleagues (capt: Eddie Docherty).
As ever, our thanks to all who participated and to the team captains for ensuring the fixtures were fulfilled. The Team Player of the Year (nominations – Bert Cotter (afsquash 1), Chris Brown (afsquash 2), Steve Jaques (afsquash 3), Paul Bee (Norfolk Optics), Karl Drayton (J&M Machining), Dave Ball (afsquash A), Steve Hame (afsquash B), Hamish Falconer (afsquash Yorks) & Dan Cheetham (afsquash Lincs) and Team Captain of the Year (Alan Dann Memorial) will be announced at the end of season presentations on Sunday 22nd May.
Grimsby 3 Man End of Season Tournament
Whilst AFSC was surprisingly not represented by many entries in this years Doosan Power Systems sponsored event we still managed to collect some silverware.
Most notable success was Dan Cheetham who was runner-up in the Division 1 KO losing in the final to the experienced Meirion Yeoman (3-0). Dan had impressively beaten U17 England ranked Charlotte Kirkwood in the semi-final 3-1.
Paul Matthewman missed out in the Div2 Round-Robin losing to both of the eventual finalists. Peter Hindmarsh won the Div3 plate beating Ian Shaw 3-0 in the final.
Picking up their teams winners trophies and medals were Dan Cheetham, afsquash 1 (Div1 Champs) and Paul Matthewman and Karl Drayton, afsquash J&M Machining (Div2 Champs).
Millie Soulby was awarded the John Barrett trophy for most impressive Junior player and Peter Hindmarsh won the Colin Burnett Trophy for his overall contribution to the tournament.
Half Season Round-up
A mixed first half of the season for our teams with a number of unplayed matches still to be played due to the weather in December.
Our Yorkshire League team is faring better this year particularly with a number of the younger players who have continued their development and are benefitting from the experience. Hamish Falconer is certainly leading the way at first string and has put in some admirable performances year to date. The team is being further strengthened by the addition of Alan Othen whom many will remember from previous years. Current position 6th w4 from 10.
In Grimsby our div1 team afsquash 1 has certainly suffered from unplayed matches and currently sits mid table (w2 of 3). In div 2 J&M Machining (w2 of 6) and Norfolk Optics (w3 of 5) also sit mid table. Afsquash 2 head div 3 (w5 of 7) including two wins over afsquash 3 (w1 of 3). Chris Brown and Richard Prendergast are enjoying their first full season in this league for Afsquash 2 for which Millie Soulby made her team squash debut against afsquash 3 just before Christmas.
In the HumberSquash League Afsquash A are comfortably sitting mid table (W4, D2, L3). Meanwhile afsquash B dominate div 5 with team captain George Sheath employing a cast of thousands and more “ringers” than Lincoln Cathedral (W10 of 10). Had we envisaged this sudden influx of available players we could have competed well and more meaningfully in a higher division.
Having gained promotion to the Lincs Premier League in their first season our Lincs team is unfortunately struggling this season. Karen and Joe Dixon, supplemented by Nick Bunch, Dan Cheetham and several other willing members underline how strong this league is in comparison with Div 1.
Please come and support our teams whenever possible for home matches. We have put up a “What’s On” noticeboard in reception to highlight fothcoming events. Our best wishes for all teams for the second half of the season and we hope everyone remains fit and more importantly enjoy their team squash.
